17th November On Friday, OpenAI announced the departure of Sam Altman from his role as CEO, citing a board-conducted review that revealed a lack of consistent transparency in his communications, leading to a loss of confidence in his leadership. The company’s blog post also revealed that Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer, will assume the role of interim CEO with immediate effect, while a search is underway for a permanent successor.

Altman, in response to the news, shared his appreciation for his transformative time at OpenAI on X (formerly Twitter), describing the experience of his departure as “sorta like reading your own eulogy while you’re still alive.”

OpenAI disclosed that Greg Brockman, co-founder and president, will step down as the chairman of the board but will remain with the company. However, shortly after the announcement, Brockman took to X to announce his resignation, expressing his decision in light of the day’s developments.

Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today.

Let us first say thank you to all the incredible people who we have worked with at OpenAI, our customers, our investors, and all of those who have been reaching out.

We too are still trying to figure out exactly…

The sudden turn of events is notable, as Altman has been a prominent figure for OpenAI, notably leading the keynote at the company’s inaugural DevDay conference just last week. During this event, significant updates were unveiled to compete with major tech players like Microsoft and Google. Altman’s recent participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference further underscores the unexpected nature of this change.
