The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), entrusted with the mission of eradicating poverty across more than 170 nations, is embarking on a transformative initiative to enhance the expertise of its 22,000-strong workforce in the realm of blockchain technology. In an innovative collaboration, the UNDP has joined forces with the Algorand Foundation to inaugurate a Blockchain Academy scheduled for launch in 2024.This groundbreaking academy is designed to cater to UNDP staff members spanning 170 countries, facilitating comprehensive education on distributed ledger technology and blockchain applications. The curriculum will encompass diverse aspects, including financial inclusion, supply chain transparency, real-world asset tokenization, and digital identity applications. The overarching goal is to leverage blockchain to foster sustainable development growth worldwide.

Speaking at the Algorand Impact Summit in New Delhi, Robert Pasicko, UNDP’s expert for alternative finance and low-carbon development, highlighted the partnership’s significance in empowering UN practitioners globally. The academy’s educational framework will incorporate lectures, workshops, and hands-on assignments, providing UNDP personnel with the requisite tools to address intricate global challenges through blockchain technology.

Doro Unger-Lee, Head of Education and Inclusion at the Algorand Foundation, emphasized the pivotal role of education as the foundational step toward implementing practical blockchain solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Algorand, known for its layer-1 blockchain offering secure, efficient, and scalable applications, witnessed marginal market movement following the announcement. The native token, ALGO, was trading at $0.135, registering a modest 1.5% increase at the time of reporting.

The UN’s exploration of blockchain applications dates back several years. In 2018, the UNDP collaborated with the Blockchain Charity Foundation to harness distributed ledger technology for social good. Concurrently, UN Secretary-General António Guterres established a “High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation” in 2018, focusing on the potential of blockchain technology in advancing global digital initiatives.

This latest partnership with the Algorand Foundation represents a significant stride in the UN’s ongoing commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies for sustainable development and poverty eradication.
